Honda introduced the SP-1 in 2000 as a World Superbike (WSBK) homologation special, built so a racing version could compete. The bike has a 999cc, 90-degree V-twin engine and gear-driven camshafts controlling the valves. It produces about 130 bhp and has a lot of character.
The SP-1 uses a strong twin-spar aluminium frame and fully adjustable suspension. Unlike the standard VTR, its swingarm pivot mounts directly to the frame, making it more stable in racing. With twin-disc brakes and a firm, focused setup, the SP-1 performs well on tracks and fast UK roads. Its design and performance earned it a legendary reputation, especially after Colin Edwards won the World Superbike title with it in its first year.
